Our Project
Social isolation is an issue that affects more people every day, including people with Alzheimer’s and Dementia. Research has recently shown that table tennis can reduce the symptoms and slow down the progress of Alzheimers disease. We want to provide these people with a safe place in the community where they can come together, build strong relationships and create a sense of belonging.
Scientists analysed data from MRI scans during their research, they found table tennis can help reduce cognitive decline and improve long-term memory for those living with the illness. In those with dementia and Alzheimer’s, the hippocampus is shown to be smaller, but activity, such as table tennis, has be shown to help with blood flow to the brain and actually stimulate that part of it. The idea is that if the hippocampus is stimulated and therefore bigger then that’s going to support the brain to hold back symptoms of Alzheimer’s for longer.
According to research table tennis has numerous, targeted and beneficial physical effects for those living with dementia, including: increased cerebral blood flow, better co-ordination and improved balance, which ultimately builds self-confidence and reduces falls. Other benefits are increased hand-eye coordination, dexterity, fine motor skills, upper body strength and balance, and it is a social activity which is key for well-being and happiness.
Therefore we want to start specific sessions within our Community Club, for people with Dementia and Alzheimers to play table tennis. We strongly believe table tennis is a medium through which people can connect; an entertaining tool that empowers older people to take control.
We will focus on health benefits as well as the social benefits, and besides the table tennis there will be a chance to relax with a drink in our cafe area. Besides hosting specific sessions within our club venue, we will go out in the community to inform people about our project. We would like to create links with nursing homes and other organisations who support people with Alzheimer’s.
As Cardiff City Community Table Tennis Club, we want to give something back to our community. With this project, we want to support people and improve their quality of life. Will you vote for us and support us to build a stronger community?
will we get your vote..??
